Why Are High-power Testing Systems Shifting Toward Liquid-cooled Load Banks?

Jul 01, 2026 Leave a message

As the power ratings of power supplies, energy storage systems, charging equipment, and new energy products continue to rise, the heat generated during load testing increases correspondingly. Traditional air-cooled load banks rely primarily on fans to dissipate heat; however, at high power levels or during prolonged continuous loading, they often face issues such as bulky equipment size, high operating noise, and the accumulation of hot exhaust air at the test site.

Liquid-cooled load banks (also known as water-cooled load banks) operate by using a circulating coolant to absorb heat generated by the load resistors, which is then dissipated via an external heat exchange system. Compared to air cooling, liquids offer superior heat transfer capabilities, allowing for the integration of higher-power load modules within a compact footprint.

In practical testing applications, liquid-cooled load banks offer three key advantages. First, they provide higher power density, enabling a more compact cabinet design for the same testing capacity. Second, by reducing the reliance on high-volume fans, they create a quieter operating environment for laboratories and production lines. Third, the temperature across load modules remains relatively uniform, facilitating stable, long-duration loading operations.

Of course, implementing a liquid-cooling solution involves more than simply adding water pipes and pumps. A complete water-cooled load system must account for factors such as inlet and outlet temperatures, flow rates, pressure, sealing integrity, protection mechanisms (e.g., low-water and over-temperature protection), and coolant maintenance. Therefore, when selecting a liquid-cooled load bank, one must consider not only power and voltage specifications but also whether the site meets the necessary cooling infrastructure requirements.

For testing high-power supplies, energy storage converters, generator sets, charging equipment, and industrial power systems, liquid-cooled load banks are emerging as a superior solution-offering a compact, low-noise, and reliable option for continuous operation.
